Proposals for parents on benefits to pay more in child support

The Government is expected to announce today that non-resident parents on benefits will have to double the amount they pay on child support - from £5 to £10 a week.

There are more than 150,000 such parents (mostly men) from whom the CSA collects child support, which it then passes onto the parent with care.

The £10 a week charge (which is a fixed amount, regardless of how many children are involved) will be taken directly off the claimant’s benefits.
