One law firm was quoted in The Telegraph as having seen a 30 per cent increase in new cases in the past year, and suggested it was because unhappy couples who had put off a split because they could not afford it were now reconsidering.

The firm said the rise mirrored the sharp drop in new enquiries about divorces it saw in the wake of the financial crisis four years ago.
